No Pain, No Seine

Planning a trip to Paris is both exciting and nerve-wracking. Will there be time to visit my favorite Impressionist paintings and sample the best of Berthillon ice cream? Where are my maps and guidebooks? Can I fit 23 pairs of shoes in a carry-on bag? Pain in my heart is one thing. Pain in my feet quite another!

My humble recommendations:
1. If it's impressionism you seek, skip the Louvre, go straight to the Orsay. (Though you may want to take in the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, which is next to the Louvre -- and technically, part of it -- for great Art Deco whimsy.)
2. Skip the ice cream, and go straight for the falafel; L'As du Fallafel is is your one-stop, at 34 Rue des Rosiers in the Marai. (Kosher Pizza can be found directly across the street - need I say more?)
3. The only two maps/guidebooks you'll ever need are "Knopf Map Guides Paris" and "The Paris Mapguide," by Michael Middleditch. "Let's Go Paris" is a wonderfully detailed procedurals, however.
4. 3 Pairs of shoes, two of them sneakers, all of them black & comfortable, are what you'll need. Plus one pair of sandals to carry for relief when those marble museum floors take their toll. Make the other shoes sturdy and supportive to handle the cobblestones.
5. If you drink American, be sure to bring a can. You won't find anything remotely resembling it. Otherwise, be prepared to slurp espresso!
Au revoir!

PS: When I said, "If you drink American," I was referring to American *coffee,* of course.
PPS: One other must-have item you cannot be without in the City of Lights is the Paris Pad™, n'est-ce que pas?
